Vanda Miss Joaquim was named after Miss Agnes Joaquim, who successfully cross-bred Vanda teres with Vanda hookeriana to create Vanda Miss Joaquim. Miss Agnes Joaquim was born on 7 April 1854, to a prominent Armenian family that had a long tradition of interest and success in horticulture. As an avid gardener and horticulturalist, Miss Agnes Joaquim won numerous prizes at flower shows for cultivating various flowers, ferns, spices, fruits and vegetables.

*Research has shown that the parents of Vanda Miss Joaquim, Vanda teres and Vanda hookeriana should actually be in the genus Papilionanthe, instead of Vanda. Thus, the scientific names of these flowers are now Papilionanthe teres, Papilionanthe hookeriana and Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim. However, Vanda Miss Joaquim continues to be the common name of Singapore’s national flower.
