Sir Stamford Raffles commemorative medallion
The Sir Stamford Raffles medallion is issued in commemoration of the 200th anniversary since Sir Stamford Raffles signed a treaty to set up a trading post in Singapore on 6 February 1819. Sir Stamford Raffles' arrival onto Singapore shores was a key turning point in Singapore's history and set the country on a different trajectory, bringing Singapore to where it is today.
The medallion obverse features the portrait of Sir Stamford Raffles, the text' SINGAPORE BICENTENNIAL' and year '1819 - 2019'. The reverse design features the historic Raffles Landing Site, where Sir Stamford Raffles was believed to first set foot onto Singapore shores in 1819. The reverse design also depicts how Singapore has developed over the years, with sampans (small wooden boats) on the Singapore River depicting our humble beginning and well-developed infrastructures now to symbolise the past and present respectively.
