Seokguram Grotto (the Temple of the Stone Buddha) is located near the top of Mt. Tohamsan in South Korea. It is home to the Sakyamuni Tathagata Buddha (the Incarnation of Truth). The focus of the 2nd coin in this exquisite collection, the serenity of the Buddha at the cusp of enlightenment is skillfully captured on the obverse.
Seokguram Grotto encapsulates Korean Buddhism in the 8th century and is celebrated as a harmonious union of Buddhist artistry, geometry, architecture and religion. Including the main Buddha, it houses a total of 39 images of Buddhism.
The Dhungkar or the conch is featured on the reverse in vivid colours and fine detailing. It is a powerful yet subtle symbol of the spread of Buddhist teachings and the rousing of disciples from their slumber of ignorance.
