The first time ever for a set of South Korean commemorative medallions to feature the portraits of the two leaders (Moon Jae-in, President of South Korea, and Kim Jong-un, Leader of Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea), the obverse design shows the two leaders firmly shaking hand and posing for a historic photo shoot in front of a painting “Kumgang Mountain”. The mountain is located in North Korea near the border, which was once considered a symbol of inter-Korean reconciliation. The painting was painted by a South Korean artist Shin Jang-sik, and was brought to be hung specially for the occasion in the summit room on the 2nd floor of Peace House. The shape of Korea peninsula is shown in between the two leaders, located below the title “Inter-Korean Summit” and the date of the summit, 2018.4.27.
The reverse design captures the historic moment when the two leaders crossed over the military demarcation line between two Koreas. Emerging from the North side, Kim Jong-un was met by President Moon Jae-in, who waited near the Military Demarcation Line. After shaking hands, Kim took a symbolic step, becoming the first North Korean leader to set foot in the South. Kim then suggested to Moon to cross over to the North. Moon accepted, and together they turned back, hand-in-hand. They stood on the North side briefly, and then turned back again to head for the Peace House. “Peace, a New Start”, which is the slogan for the 2018 Inter-Korean Summit is shown minted both in Korean and English text.
