Emperor Akihito’s abdication of the Chrysanthemum Throne on 30 April 2019 brought down the curtain on thirty-one-year history of the era of his reign, known as Heisei. Crown Prince Naruhito acceded to the throne as the 126th Emperor of Japan on 1 May 2019, making the beginning of the new Reiwa era.
The phoenix appears on the gold coins’ obverse side celebrating the enthronement of His Majesty the 126th Emperor Naruhito. At the feet of the phoenix, you can find auspicious clouds (zuiun).
Depicted on the reverse side of the 10,000-yen gold coin is the chrysanthemum crest of the Imperial House. The crest is wreathed by two plants: betula grossa (Japanese cherry birch) on the left for Emperor Naruhito’s mark and rosa rugosa (Japanese rose) on the right for Empress Masako’s. There is also the engraved letters “令和 (Reiwa)”, which is the new era name, interpreted as “beautiful harmony”, deriving from Manyoshu, the oldest anthology of poetry in Japan completed in the eighth century.
