As the 34th coin of the Japan 47 Prefectures Coin Series, this Yamagata coin features Mogami River and Sakuranbo cherry. Mogami River has greatly contributed to the daily life and culture of the residents of the prefecture since the Edo Period. Commodities such as rice, safflower were transported by this waterway and then shipped to Kyoto or Osaka via the sea route. Mogami River is also known as one of the rapidest rivers in Japan. Accompanying the design highlights the Sakuranbo Cherry, a kind of cherry which is a fruit of Mizakura, a cherry tree belonging to the genus Prunus and the family of Rosaceae. More importantly, the Sakuranbo cherry is also the designated tree of the prefecture, making this coin a symbolic one.
The Japan 47 Prefectures Coin Series is issued since 2008 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Local Autonomy Law; it highlights the cultures and customs of the various prefectures in Japan.
