Japan His Majesty the Emperor Akihito, born in 1933, acceded to the throne as the 125th Emperor of Japan on 7 January 1989.
His Majesty will be abdicating on 30 April 2019 due to advancing age, which means that this coin series will be the very final series dedicated to His Majesty.
In modern Japan, there had been no instance of Emperor's retirement; modern Emperors had been in their position until their demise.
His Majesty’s abdication will be the first time in more than 200 years since 1817.

This coin set contains one gold coin and one base metal coin.
Phoenix appeared on the gold coin's obverse side celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Enthronement of His Majesty the Emperor Akihito. Each Member of the Japan’s Imperial Family has a sign used to mark their belongings. Paulownia for Emperor Akihito and white birch for Empress Michiko are depicted on the obverse side of the gold coin.
The Ceremonial Carriage, which carried the Imperial Couple (Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko) at the wedding procession on 10 April 1959, was chosen as the obverse design of the base metal coin in celebration of the 60th wedding anniversary of Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko in 2019.
Depicted on the reverse side of the both coins is the Imperial Crest of the Chrysanthemum.
