Japan His Majesty the Emperor Akihito, born in 1933, acceded to the throne as the 125th
Emperor of Japan on 7 January 1989. His Majesty will be abdicating on 30 April 2019
due to advancing age, which means that this coin series will be the very final series
dedicated to His Majesty. In modern Japan, there had been no instance of Emperor's
retirement; modern Emperors had been in their position until their demise. His
Majesty’s abdication will be the first time in more than 200 years since 1817.
