Lion, the king of animals, is well known to be a symbol of bravery, strength and power. Therefore, the Chinese custom of lion dance performances on major festivals like Chinese New Year has gradually formed since ancient times as lion is believed to be able to ward off evil spirits and bless people with good luck and peace.
Lion dance is performed by two persons, one to manipulate the papier-mâché head of the lion, and another to act as its hind legs. The performers abstractly express the lion motions through different stances and moving of the lion's head. The lion dance is accompanied by rhythmic beats of drums, gongs, and cymbals, which create a festive and joyous atmosphere.
